4-H Environmental Educator - All Environmental Education Instructors at the 4-H centers in Georgia are technically 4-H Environmental Educators. They are hired from all over the U. S. to teach classes to school groups attending programs at the 4-H centers. (see also Instructor)

4-H Camp - see 4-H Center or Summer Camp Program

4-H Center - a facility set aside for youth development programs administered by the Cooperative Extension Service through the Georgia 4-H Club

4-H Club - a youth development organization administered by the Cooperative Extension Service of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia through local county offices of the Cooperative Extension Service and the State 4-H Office; youth in most every county in Georgia participate in local 4-H clubs.

4-H’er - a 4-H Club member

Agent - a full-time employee of the UGA Cooperative Extension Service who generally serves in a local county office

Agents & Leaders - employees and volunteers in the local county offices of the Cooperative Extension Service who provide leadership to youth members of the county 4-H Clubs. Agents & Leaders chaperone 4-H’ers in their cabins when they attend summer camp.

Cabin Leader - an adult responsible for youth who is assigned to a particular cabin while at Summer Camp

Center Director - a full-time employee of the Cooperative Extension Service who runs a 4-H center and supervises its staff

challenge course - a class taught at Wahsega 4-H Center that combines initiatives and Low-ropes course activities

chaperone - an adult responsible for youth; discipline is handled by adult chaperones

Cloverleaf 4-H’er - 4-H Club members in the fourth, fifth or sixth grade during the school year or rising fifth, sixth or seventh graders during the summer

conference group -see Guest Conferences

Counselor - a Summer Camp Program staff member hired to serve as a facilitator of the Georgia 4-H Summer Camp Program at each of the five 4-H centers; counselors live in staff housing for the duration of the summer and do not serve as chaperones in the cabins with the campers.

EE - Environmental Education

element - a structure built of wood, cable or rope on a ropes course around which each learning activity is centered

Environmental Education Instructor - see 4-H Environmental Educator

Environmental Education - one of the programs provided by Georgia 4-H for youth development; it is available at Rock Eagle, Jekyll Island, Burton, Fortson and Wahsega 4-H Centers

Guest Conferences - an event at Wahsega 4-H Center that is not part of either the Georgia 4-H Summer Camp or Environmental Education programs; examples of guest conferences are church retreats, band camps or groups using the center for lodging

herpetology - the study reptiles and amphibians

high-ropes course - ropes course elements that allow youth to explore personal physical challenges in a safe environment; high-ropes are more advanced than low-ropes

initiatives - team building games used to introduce the concepts used on the low-ropes course

instructor - an Environmental Education staff member hired by the on-site Program Coordinator at the 4-H center to serve as a facilitator of the Georgia 4-H Environmental Education field studies at the 4-H center; instructors live in staff housing and do not serve as chaperones in the cabins with the students

Junior 4-H’er - 4-H Club members in the seventh or eighth grade during the school year or rising eighth and ninth graders during the summer

Kitchen Manager - The head cook in the dining hall and the supervisor of the kitchen staff

Lead Agent Coordinator - An agent assigned to help the Center Director and Lead Counselor coordinate with employees and volunteers in other counties who take 4-H’ers to attend a specific week of camp

Lead Counselor - a Summer Camp Counselor designated as the supervisor for other counselors; also “Head Counselor” or “Mama or Papa Bear”

leaders - employees not designated as Agents, such as Program Assistants and Educational Program Specialist, in the local county offices of the Cooperative Extension Service, high school-age teens designated as Teen Leaders, community and parent volunteers, and bus drivers who provide leadership to youth members of the county 4-H Clubs

low-ropes course - ropes course elements that allow youth to learn team building skills

naturalist - see Instructor

project, Project Achievement - Projects are part of county 4-H club programming. For information on projects go to the main Georgia 4-H website or contact your local county office.

rent, rental - While we do not rent the entire 4-H center out to a group and give them the keys, we do book groups that are not affiliated with 4-H. See also guest conferences

ropes course - an area of the 4-H center set aside to teach team building skills or to allow youth to explore personal physical challenges in a safe environment on structures called elements; a facilitator (either a 4-H Environmental Educator or a Summer Camp Counselor) guides youth through the course

Summer Camp Counselor - see Counselor

Summer Camp Program - one of the programs provided by Georgia 4-H for youth development during the summer at the state’s five 4-H centers

Teen Leader - a 4-H Club member who helps chaperone younger 4-H Club members at 4-H Camp or 4-H events; Teen Leaders are not Counselors and are not responsible for discipline of younger youth
